On 24 July 2025, the Ecuadorian government merged government ministries as part of its broader strategy to reduce public spending, increase government efficiency and revive Ecuador’s economy.The Ministry of the Environment was merged into the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and the Ministry of Women and Human Rights was dismantled, paving the way for unchecked environmental destruction and human rights abuses, particularly for Indigenous Peoples through the expansion of extractive industries.The current government’s approach to revitalising the national economy is underpinned by an international finance landscape that pits private finance flows against nature and climate.

COP16 reaffirmed the goal to protect 30% of the world’s land and seas by 2030. The 8th Just Transition Platform Conference was a forum for policy experts, academics and practitioners to come together and share views, experiences and perspectives on the ongoing transition. On its last day, the Conference focused on marginalised perspectives on the just transition, as well as on the role of universities and the challenges of communicating clear action points about the transition process. The questions of who is taking advantage of the transition and who is the most impacted, as well as who is underrepresented in the labour market and in decision making, are key to ensure that the transition will be truly just.
