Food@COP: A youth-led food and climate campaign nearly 4 years young
As we wrote for ClimaTalk back in 2021, Food@COP is a collection of youth from across the globe who believe that climate-friendly negotiations must take place over climate-friendly meals. We call upon the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) host country organizers to serve affordable, nutritious, predominantly plant-based, and culturally inclusive foods that reflect the urgency of the climate crisis. Here’s an update on the group’s activities in 2023 and details of a few grassroots projects led by active campaigners.

Africa Climate Summit: Nairobi, September 2023
As I reflect on this experience, I'm encouraged to see Africa growing its participation in climate discussions. During my one-week experience at the Africa Climate Summit and Africa Climate Week, I had the privilege of networking and also attending incredible side events focused on climate adaptation, climate finance, and carbon markets to be specific. For example, I attended an event hosted by the African Union Commission on leveraging the potential of voluntary carbon credits for sustainable financing and the vast potential that the continent can leverage to enhance its resilience. I further did interviews with various correspondents giving my insights and shedding light on critical discussions.

UK’s Third National Adaptation Programme: Missed Opportunity
The NAP3 acts as ‘The Programme’ for climate resilience and adaptation by accumulating the approaches designed by the Government into one program. There is a notable absence of new laws or financing acquired to safeguard existing homes against climate risk Baroness Brown stated that despite the NAP3 looking progressive in comparison to prior Government Actions, it is disappointing they have not used the opportunity to take further action

Carbon Footprint Of Buildings: Solutions
Improving the operational carbon footprint of buildings by, for example, insulation and electrifying the grid, is one solution. A second solution is to reduce the embodied carbon of constructing a building. Finally, policies and incentives such as creating a lead market need to be put in place to support low-carbon products which contribute to creating lower-carbon buildings.

The Global Indigenous Youth Summit On Climate Change (GIYSCC) – Advocating For Indigenous Youth Rights and Recognition
Both national and international climate change policies such as COP fail to acknowledge the importance of Indigenous Knowledge in the context of the climate crisis. The Global Indigenous Youth Summit On Climate Change (GIYSCC) held on the 9th of August brought Indigenous youths from all over the world to co-create dialogues that fostered the exchange of climate crisis mitigation and adaptation ideas.
